4 Baby Boomer Housing Trends to Watch

Posted on November 11, 2015 | Read time: 2 minutes

The baby boomer generation is more active than generations past, has a more sophisticated style and wants options and choices in their homes. Whether they are selling the homes where they raised their children and heading to sunnier pastures, or buying a second home to accommodate their retired lifestyle, boomers are making an impact on housing trends.

  1. They want to lower their housing expenses. Many boomers look forward to moving to a smaller house or condo in warm weather to free up equity to pay for travel or other extra expenses they know they’ll face at some point in the years ahead. Peninsula on the Intracoastal in Boynton Beach provides luxury condos and townhomes with Palm Beach waterfront views offering boomers a better value for their money.
  2. Boomers want more convenience. Less maintenance, less work and less worry. Most boomers have been there, done that with older homes. They want modern appliances, spacious kitchens, good views, and fresh, new décor. Residents of Alteza above the Grand Hyatt have breathtaking views of downtown San Antonio with floor to ceiling windows, a contemporary designed home and 24-hour concierge services.
  3. They want a walkable neighborhood.Boomers have spent half their lives in the car, commuting to work and ferrying kids around. Now many want to live on a block with a grocery store and restaurant. The new Alton community in Palm Beach Gardens combines the best in recreation, business, convenience and residential living. Florida’s warm weather allows residents of Alton to walk and bike year round for all their needs.
  4. They want to be social.  Neighborhoods with a clubhouse allow boomers to easily stay social and make new friends. Mizner Country Club in the Boca Raton/Delray area features a 42,000 sf clubhouse, Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course, and a packed events calendar. With more time on their hands from retirement, boomers want a clubhouse for member dining, hospitality and entertainment.

Boomers expect to sell their old home and move to new quarters, which may be less expensive, more comfortable and more appropriate for their new stage of life as retired empty nesters. As home builders continue to prepare for boomer housing needs, it is important to note that these home buyers have more discretionary income than any other generation in the history of the United States.
